Teakwood is recognized and valued for its excellent properties:
- Durable
Teak can be exposed to the elements without any significant decay. Its cells contain “tectoquinone”, a natural substance that protects against termites and other insects, as well as against various fungi that cause rot. It also contains “caoutchouc”, a kind of latex that controls timber moisture variation and reduces abrasion by lubricating the surface of the wood.
- Light, but resistant
Ideal for crafting chairs and other items of furniture that require a blend of lightness and structural sturdiness.
- Highly stable
Little susceptible to warping or shrinkage during drying or when subjected to moisture variations in the environment.
- Easy to work with
Teak can be sawn, planed, sanded, turned and bored with ease and with excellent finish. The use of hard metal cutting tools is recommended. It also readily accepts glue or paint.
- Elegant appearance
The golden color of the heartwood and its intense sheen give teak a much-appreciated elegant appearance. Teakwood continuously exposed to the weather will age elegantly over the years to a soft silver grey.
Nowadays, due to its high price, teak is mostly used for boat deckings, kitchen and bathroom worktops and outdoor furniture.
