Cáceres Florestal was the pioneer in establishing productive teak plantations on Brazilian soil. Forestry research and experimentation began in 1968 with the initiation of competitive trials to compare various native species, including mahogany, and some exotic species, such as teak.

Teak outperformed all others for its fast growth, hardiness and good forest form. Other reasons for its selection were the strong demand and high price fetched by its timber on the international market.
